Cholera in Nigeria's Flood Season: The ₦200 Sachet That Saves a Life — and the Mixing Mistake That Costs One
Most diseases give you time. Cholera does not. A healthy adult can wake up well, start passing watery stool by afternoon, and be in life-threatening dehydration before the day ends. The World Health Organization puts it plainly: cholera can be fatal within hours if untreated. Nigeria has recorded more than 65,000 suspected cholera cases in 2026, spread across 35 states and roughly 195 local government areas — a national picture, not a corner of the country. Weekly cases have come down from the peak earlier in the season, and a smaller share of cases are ending in death than at this time last year. But the outbreak is not over, and the timing matters: we are still in the rainy season, when floodwater mixes with sewage, contaminates wells and boreholes, and overwhelms drainage.
